FLEET NEWS

It's customary to put in a load of news here about what the rest of the GE (Navy, Army, etc.) have been getting up to. But screw that. We don't really care what those losers are doing :P Anyone who's interested can check out the message board every few days (http://empirereborn.net/holonet).

SHIP NEWS

Welp, since this is the first official e-mail since the change in command, there have been a lot of changes this week. I'm the new Sherrif in town. A bunch of different people have come aboard and left in the past month. The Chinook now has almost a full complement of seven active members. Besides Rommel, most of these are fresh out of the academy, with a combined GE active service record of less than six months. That's the bad news. The good news is that all officers onboard are keen, mean and eager to prove that the good Frigate Chinook takes second place to nobody. We've ditched our baggage, ladies, everyone left is here because they want to be, not because they think it sounds cool to have "FRG Chinook" in their ID Line (I hope :P). On with the news.

New members on the Chinook

Yep, this is pretty much everyone. I think only Galda has been on this war canoe for a longer time than I have. A special welcome back to former ISB-GEN Rommel, now EF Rommel / Communications.

New First Officer

As indicated earlier, we needed a new first officer to help me around this place. I was surprised that I only had two applications for this position, but it didn't make the choice any easier for me. Basically, when selecting a first officer for his ship, a commander has three main factors to take into consideration:
a) leadership potential
b) obvious leadership ability
c) career progression.

I'll explain each factor in more detail here. Leadership potential means that a commander should be looking for pilots who MAY be good a good commanding officer in the future IF they are developed properly while at first officer.

Obvious Leadership ability is self-explanatory. Any pilot in the Squadron who clearly displays the leadership skills required of a commanding officer, or who has successfully commanded a ship, squadron, or even flight, in the past. In any situation where a Squadron is in trouble, a commander should select a first officer with obvious leadership ability. Unproven first officers will do no-one any good in a situation where the ship needs all the help it can get.

Finally, career progression. This simply means that if you pick a 2LT as first officer on a FRG, he can't be promoted any further anyway. If you pick a SL, then he can enjoy another promotion in his new position, and might make him work a bit harder :P. This should NEVER be a commander's sole reason for picking a first officer.

Bearing all of the above in mind, I reached my decision based on the fact that we're doing pretty well as a ship, despite all of the cycling in and out of cadets and AWOLS, respectively. Also, because the person I'm choosing can expect to be promoted if they perform well. Had the situation in the ship been different, I'd have had no hesitation in selecting the second applicant, due to his obvious ability and exceptional activity levels. Therefore the new SCS-XO aboard the Chinook was given to SL Che.

Congratulations Che, but bear in mind that you'll be on a trial period at first. My basic requirements for all of my XOs is that you fly in ALL contests that we takes part in. That's the minimum I expect, you'll also have to be as or more active than the rest of the ship, and show me that I wasn't wrong to give you your chance. Your trial period will end when I either relieve you of your position and make you part of the FRG's operations staff again or I promote you to 2LT. Good luck!

Ship Tattoos A Success!

The regulation tattooing of all ship members went off with only a few minor hitches. Nurse Bailey was a little stumped when the invisible Ramius Stantari took his turn at bending over for his "Property of Jack Pavz" tattoo, but we solved the problem when my cigar smoke activated the fire alarms and doused sickbay in fire retardant foam. We're still not exactly sure which part of the foam drenched mass received the obligatory tattoo, but Stantari suddenly became a lot more talkative afterwards, so we're not complaining.

THIS WEEK IN QUOTES

Ok, the first person to admit to have ever liked Biker Mice from Mars must be punished :P
Did anybody ever watch Gummi Bears? :P

*These are the things you get to worry about when you reach High Command. :P

Interesting. Opened the first spam in months.
Spam can or spam email?
Didn't recognize the name, but the title was "S.O.B." and that was somewhat interesting. :P
You recognized your name.
Since people don't usually tell me that I'm an SOB over email. Other mediums, perhaps, but not emails.

*Karma's a bitch. :P

`Pavz wonders why he never gets saluted :P
Because the new people think you're a newbie too and the old people [who you used to outrank] all outrank you. :P

*So true... sniff :P

A metallic speck in the distance could be seen from the cockpit. The speck grew to a Burton, then the two vessels drew close enough for the cylindral shape to be distinguished.
<`Pavz> Grew to a Burton?
I think that's spelled "burden" :P

*Yes!

This week's quote of the week goes to Jagged Fel for his succinct description of Major Burton. :P
