That's funny, I just tend to take a bunch of AT-ATs, line them up, fill them with the max number of Repeater troopers, and blast a hole in the AI's walls. After that, bring in the AT-ATs to the center of the base, let the repeaters out, sit back, and enjoy.
Simple.

Seriously, though it may not be as prevalent in GB as in other, more complex games, maintaining a clear picture of the enemy's strengths and weaknesses, their overall order of battle and their deployments will allow you to succeed even when you are in the inferior position. Especially in economic warfare, the ability to not only seperate your enemy from their supplies, but to cripple their production can turn a hard fight into a a simple mop up operation.
Boldness of action and mobility on the battlefield are also key points. But most of all, keeping pride from getting in the way of your tactical ability will keep you from wasting units and resources when it might be more prudent to withdraw and regroup.

EaW on a SP basis is bad for the good points of retreating. The AI sucks so much that you can take out a whole assault force with nothing more than a level 3 station.

Captain Wedge is entirely correct. As I outline in one of my treatises, (and the idea is much older, coming from Sun-Tzu) you have to know yourself and the enemy. Don't underestimate him, and don't overestimate yourself. One of the worst things you can do is persist with an idea which is incorrect.
When attacking anything, always advance in such a direction and such a way as to have multiple possible objectives. This accomplishes two things: first, it makes your enemy uncertain as to which is your primary objective. Second, it allows you freedom to take another objective is your first choice becomes unattainable.

That is one of the resons I think Grand Admiral Thrawn is the most brilliant fictional character in any book, not just Star Wars. He took the time to know his enemy so well he could attack their psychological blind spots. And the fact that he was willing to withdraw rather than waste men and resources on a battle already lost is the mark of a true leader.Calder wrote:Captain Wedge is entirely correct. I can only hope I never encounter a real life Thrawn on a battlefield, be it digital or otherwise.
Well put Captain Calder. It reminds me of the situation during the initial German attack on Russia in 1941. Despite the fact that attacking the Soviet Union head on would drive the enemy back on his reserves and offer the most resistance, the sheer vastness of the country caused a low ratio of forces per space. This allowed the German mechinized forces to make local advances by threaten several different cities simultaniously. The Soviets, not knowing which location the Germans planned to strike, were forced to try to protect all the threatened cities, diluting their strength and allowing the Germans to mass their forces at a single point and breaking through.Calder wrote:When attacking anything, always advance in such a direction and such a way as to have multiple possible objectives. I could put you in the forward viewing room during our next fight. Sadly, I had droids reconfigure it as a playpen for my Christmas Ew*ks (I bought them after you left, you know; I got a great deal on those little bundles of fur), but the window is still there, so if you don't mind the fuzzy-wuzzy-ness, you could always watch from there.

See, that's where the difference lies between my tenure as SFO and La Forge's. When I was in command, it was a forward viewing port for visiting dignitaries and tactical exercises. Happy hour was from 1500-2200 every day, there was a dress code, and the durasteel decks were polished to a mirrored shine. There were models of various warships on display, with mohogany railings and everywhere the gentle hum of power and technology.
