New Legion Ranks!

Post by Orzon »

A new ranking system has been introduced into the Legion.

RANKS

Non-Commissioned Officers:

Junior Trooper (JTR) is the cadet rank of the Legion. Upon completion of training within the Imperial Academy, a Junior Trooper will become a full member of the Legion, obtaining the rank of Trooper.

Trooper (TRP), the introductory rank into the Legion upon graduating from the Academy. Upon good activity within the Legion, one is likely to see a promotion quickly.

Lance Corporal (LCP) is the second rank one may possess within the Legion; many achieve this rank quickly, if active

Corporal (CPL), one of the interim ranks a stormtrooper may achieve.

Sergeant (SGT) is a stormtrooper who has served with excellence in the detachment for a fair period of time.

Staff Sergeant (SSG) is a rank denoting those who have served for a long period at continual active levels.

Sergeant First Class (SFC), most likely the highest rank a stormtrooper can achieve, most do not proceed to the ranks above without attaining the position.

Master Sergeant (MSG) is the first rank for those holding the position of Detachment Lieutenant. For those stormtroopers who do attain this rank, without becoming a Detachment Lieutenant, they are highly respected and considered some of the best.

Sergeant Major (SGM), the highest rank for both stormtroopers and Detachment Lieutenants may achieve without attaining a higher position. Only the greatest stormtroopers will ever hold this rank, and they are few and far between, this rank is looked very highly upon.

Commissioned Officers:

Trooper Lieutenant (TL) is the first rank given to Detachment Commanders

Captain (CPT), the rank reserved for Regiment Lieutenant and long standing Detachment Commanders

Major (MAJ) is the rank afforded to Regiment Commanders and for outstanding Regiment Lieutenants

Lt. Colonel (LCL), the rank given to Battalion Commander and those excellent Regiment Commanders who have brought great activity to their Regiment

Colonel (COL) is the introductory rank for Captain of the Guard and the highest rank a Battalion Commander may obtain.

High Colonel (HCL) is introductory rank for those serving in Legion command

Brigadier (BRG), the rank afforded to excellent and long serving Legion Command members as well as the highest rank the Captain of the Guard may obtain.

Major-General (MGN) is first rank afforded to the Legion Commander, only the greatest Legion Command officers are afforded this rank.

Lieutenant General (LGN) is only afforded to the Legion Commander

General (GN) is the highest rank afforded to the Legion Commander, only the longest standing Legion Commanders will ever achieve this prestigious rank.

Questions can be directed here or to me personally. :)

The ranks for the Navy are based on what Navy Command has chosen. Legion Command as worked out this system in attempts to increase activity. And provide a greater base for officers to advance.

Navy ranks will receive an official review, and perhaps we will change them. This works for the legion much better, however, because they have enlisted troops and officers. In the Navy, everyone's an officer. :-)

Sirs:

A reason that all of us Navy files are officers is that we're either pilots, ship's officers and captains,or in administrative positions that require such rank. Also,in the "Naval" platforms that part this organization is based on, no-one who owns these games could preform such things that enlisted personell would, such as manning laser batteries, making repairs on drive systems and the like, on a naval vessel. (Unless I am sorely mistaken) The game parameters won't allow it,instead putting us into the cockpit of a TIE Fighter,Interceptor etc., etc.

Well as the former Commander of the Legion, I fully support these changes, and I believe they'll help bring about the change in Legion activity which they're aimed to help do.

Excellent work Orzon, I'm glad you're taking care of the Legion for me :)

I think it's a good idea, because now the ranks are more realistic, and not entirely dependant on your position.

Sol: If you want NCOs, look on the NCO Corps. They normally served on ships, and so they are part of the Navy.
For not NCO ranks in the GE Navy:

1. The navy has enough ranks to archive, not as the old Legion, where a trooper can´t really hope to get on higher ranks then SGM, in the navy all is possible.

2. The Imperial Navy, also in the old days of the New Order, only use commisioned officers as pilots, so where could we use NCOs?

Thank you, Lord Starbug. I'm glad you approve. :D And the reason for the new ranks does deal with activity, and with luck it will work. :P

SL Mithel, the ranks were posted in the original message. They can also be seen on the Legion profiles, although the manual is currently being re-worked.

If I am not mistaken...the NCO Corps was closed.

Fantastic, here Swomz goes on one of his long, drawn out rants.

Ranking Styles: Enlisted vs. NCOs
First of all, Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) are normally considered to be Sergeant - Sergeant Major. Enlisted troops are considered to be Private - Corporal, or in your case, Junior Trooper - Corporal. NCOs are designated as such because they are essentially an officer, but technically they are not. They are given much the same responsibility as an officer, but do not take on all the duties.

Ranking System: Mixing and Matching
While your system is definetly different and interesting, I advise not mixing systems. While you add a couple of your own ranks in the beginning it doesn't really change the overall look of things. It would be better to take a standard military approach (US Army, Marines, etc) or use the ranks outline in the Star Wars Technical Commentaries. Of course being original is good, but put that to use somewhere else where you won't confuse new members or outsiders.

My Opinion: Ideal System
Just to give you an idea of the layout of the ideal system, the system I would choose, here you go. It may have one or two ranks mixed up, but I am doing this from memory from the United States Marine Corps, so, meh, and the abbreviations and paygrades are at the side, not sure if they are right. I did not include Warrant Officers.
Enlisted:
Private (PVT, E-1)
Private First Class (PFC, E-2)
Lance Corporal (LCPL, E-3)
Corporal (CPL, E-4)
Non-Commissioned Officers
Sergeant (SGT, E-5)
Staff Sergeant (SSG, E-6)
Gunnery Sergeant (GSG, E-7)
Master Sergeant (MSG, E-8)
First Sergeant (1SG E-8)
Master Gunnery Sergeant (MGSG, E-9)
Sergeant Major (SM, E-9)
Command Sergeant Major (CSM, E-9)
Officers
Second Lieutenant (2LT, O-1)
First Lieutenant (1LT, O-2)
Captain (CAP, O-3)
Major (MAJ, O-4)
Lieutenant Colonel (LTC, O-5)
Colonel (COL, O-6)
Brigadier General (BGN, O-7)
Major General (MGN, O-8)
Lieutenant General (LGN, O-9)
General (GN, O-10)

I always like to add Marshal and Field Marshal just to give it a little spice. :-p I did not put on Sergeant Major of the (Legion) because normally he is like a morale officer for Enlisted troops, but if you want it, go for it, he is an E-9.

End rant.

May I remind you that the Legion is not the Army or the Marines.

While those ranks may be good for other areas, the Legion ranks will work as they are unique. The Legion is the more elite division of the GE, which results in the additional ranks such as High Colonel to be put in use.

Due to the current rankings in the GE, the Marshal ranks would not work, unless they became equivalents of High Admiral and Fleet Admiral.

Legion Command reviewed these ranks in great detail and after several different revisions, we choose these to fit the Legion the best.

Ah, okay. The one that I really only have a problem with is Trooper Lieutenant, not seeing two Lieutenant ranks gives me a twitch :-p
