connecting issues!!!

Post by LC Eddard Stark »

Ok here's the problem. CM Wedge and I have attempted to play XvT several times now. We've both uninstalled and reinstalled everything from the 1.1.4 patch to XvT and the BoP but nothing we do will get our computers to talk together so we can play a ladder match, we (or I) keep timing out.

Any ideas on how we or I can fix this?

The router has a built in firewall but its never affected anything else. I don't have any other firewall program. I play Return to Castle Wolfenstein daily, also I've been able to play XWA online two (though that was really laggy).

I think you need to configure port forwarding so that the incoming connections on each end can get directly to your computer. Try looking up XvT, "port forwarding" and such in google.

If all else fails you get get a port scanning tool to find the ports yourself, and enable the port forwarding. Let us know how you get on.

Are you both behind a router? Have the one that isn't host the game. Either that or use google to find the port number that XvT uses and open that port on your router.

To open the port, go to start>run and type cmd

Then type in the console "ipconfig" (without the quotes). This will tell you your local ip address. it will probebly be smething like 192.168.0.2 or 192.168.1.2 or something. Whatever that second to last number (known as a subnet) is typ into your internet browser. So it is http://192.168.XX.1 (the 1 on the end is the router, the 2 or any other number would be your computer. The XX's get replaced by the subnet I told you how ot find)

This will bring you to a webpage. Look for an option like "Virtual Server" or "Port Forwarding". In that page enter your full ip address, the port XvT uses, and when you find the port it will also tell you either TCP or UDP

Then go to www.whatismyip.com and you will find what your IP address on the internet is.

Connect to that and blam, done.

I tried to find the port number myself but couldn't find it.

Type ipconfig /all
The numbers under the "DNS Server" is your "outside" ip. You need that. Another way to find it out, when you are talking on IRC, is just entering
/dns yournickname

Have fun.

Thanks, we'll give it a try.

And in reply to the questions:
I have a PIII 700 with Windows 2000, and I'm connected by ADSL, no router, hub, switch, etc.

Shouldn't be. And even if it was it's never been a problem for me before.
