New Legion Ranks!

Or they might not find a problem besides what you make it. As I told you I joke around. I believe I read one of your latest posts which said you joke aroudn a lot, too, so joke in the context other people see it and not just your own. Then we will have no problem, even though we didn't have one to start with.

Longstreet: Yes... interesting time, that. I was just a green Lieutenant back in those days, if I recall. But yes, this does resemble it, just a bit.
Mr. Caden and Mr. Ralter: It would appear you two have a small difference of opinion on this matter. I'm not going to tell you to stop, because this might actually be healthy for the both of you, but I am going to tell you to take it off these boards. Now. You can continue it via email, AIM, IRC (/msg only!), or whatever other communication facility that you see fit, but I'm sure myself and the rest of the GE's command do not want to see arguing in a public forum. Any questions regarding this can be directed to my email address. Thank you for your cooperation.

I really like this more realistic approach to the Legion ranks. It adds to this section very often neglected in books and other fiction, giving it a hint of depth, where in books most of these people would be named "trooper" or just "TK ###".
But that leads me to two comments I need to make.
1.) The Navy ranks
I really think you guys should add a similar system to this to the neavy, and rethink the old squadron ranks.
In books (both novels and source books), there's no Lieutenants commanding squadrons. A squadron commander is usually at least that - a commander (be it LC or CM), most of the time even Captain. With other officers being flight-officers or Lieutenants.
In my humble opinion, the rank table should look like this for the Navy:
Cadet (Academy, duh)
Ensign (First rank to achieve)
Flight officer (second rank to achieve)
Lieutenant (third rank to achieve)
Lieutenant 1st (also named "Flight Leader" and rank needed to obtain status of flight leader)
Lieutenant Commander/Commander/Captain[/Major/Colonel] All these should be achievable for Squadron leaders. Baron Fel was a Major and had more than one Captain under his command. So have other squadrons in the books.
Not only would this be a tad more realistic than the old Ensign/SL/LT number, but also I think the Navy would need this. Why? Because of the same reason the Legion has it. There is no way that one can get promoted except for when one other guy decides that he doesn't want to play anmore (and resigns) or if some space at the top is free and everybody goes up one notch.
2.) Army ranks
Some people might hint that I am only saying this because I am no fan of the US army, but that is not my reason:
I do not think that the system detailed by swonz is that good. I think that so many different ranks are a bit overkill. Do you really need 5 enlisted ranks and then another 5 sargeant ranks? I think 3 would be good. Oh and the numbers are dumb.
If you take (at least some of) the US ranks for a *Star Wars* game, then at least don't make it THAT obvious that you stole them from the US Army

Well,as it is well known, thou canst have more than one Captain aboard a vessel. That is why Real Life Naval Lieutenants are the equivilant of an Army Captain(Refernce their metal pin-on insignia. The real life system breaks down like this [left side of slash is navy, right side is Army, but we should all know this]:Vortagh wrote:Lieutenant Commander/Commander/Captain[/Major/Colonel] All these should be achievable for Squadron leaders. 1 Gold Bar: Ensign/2nd Lieutenant
1 Sliver Bar: Lieutenant Junior Grade/ 1st Lieutenant
2 Sliver Bars: Lieutenant/ Captain*
1 Gold Oak Cluster: Lieutenant Commander/ Major
1 Sliver Oak Cluster: Commander/ Lieutenant Colonel
1 Silver Eagle: Captain**/ Colonel
The Major comment baffels me though, as Soontir Fel....that just baffles me
However, depening on the type of captain he had under his command, things could get sticky
Suppose that the navy rank system had two Captain ranks, one being a semi-junior officer, the other being in charge of a capital ship? Things would be impossible get done, and just thinking about the confusion during combat operations,in which rapid communication on through the chain-of-command of utmost importaint, is enough to make any officer shudder.
It could repeat could be wise to eventually implement US Navy ranks,as commanders are not only squdron commanders but also XO's on ships. However, the title of "Captain" is a most time honored-rank,and should be resrved for a ship's one-and-only monarch...[/i]

You have to think a little bit further...
I would call space ships to Navy and space fighters to "Air Force" ranks. Thus the naval "Captain" doesn't grasp here. And in the air forces the rank of "Captain" is just one amongst many...
As fighter officers wear black in the movies (compare the guy who talks to Vader in ANH when they talk about "send the crews to their fighters..."), they seem to be a different branch.

Air Force ranks or not, there can only be one ship's captain.Any other "Captain" who is not a ship's would have to be refferd to differently. However this could be debated on and on,and you can also have differnet "Captains" from auxiallary units. In all this could add from much confusion, and thats why combat officers have diffent insigna from swivel-chaired hussars.

Yes,well, the title "Line Captain" is confusing,as all combat officers are reffered to as line officers,or Officers of the Line(Using US Navy, they have a single gold star on sleeve and shoulder insignia, which denotes them as comabt officers) So it would make much sense to re-vamp the rank system to something like the new army ranks, but possibly only officers(How could we use enlisted and Non-Com's?)and use special insignia appropriate.

I don't get the discussion.
Where was it said that there is more than one "ship captain"? My entire comment about ranks was, as you can ready - if you can read
- about SQUADRONS. Squadronleaders rarely have anything do to with ship leadership.

Not true. At least not if we are speaking about two different departments here.Any other "Captain" who is not a ship's would have to be refferd to differently

We were disscussing the fact that in many books and other parts of SW history (EU) squadron commanders are Majors, Captains, Lt. Commanders, and commanders. And how the Lts would be flight leaders or lower officers in the squadron.
there is 3 things we can do here:
A) Leave the navy ranks be
B) Change them so they are like the legions, execpet with a navy twist
C) Get a drink and forget about this
Look at the EH, they have majors and generals in there flights...
so this leads to a probelm we had, that 1 can not promote unless there is an opening. If there is no opening, 1 can not promote.
With all due respect, that probably something that drives people away or makes them leave. They get to a spot like Captain and think they cant promote any further... so they stop.
Oooo well..... what does the idea of a low ranking SL (who high command keeps says makes up the boady of the GE, and couldent work with out us) mean?
We know High Command has alot on there hands, so i'm not complaning...

The EH is a bad example, while they say they have such a huge memberbase, the majority of them are inactive. Look at FES, they don't have officers in squads (detachments) for the most part, or in squadrons.
