What happened to...

Post by LC La Forge »

Senior officers making decisions and brevet ranks? The former seems to have dissappeared, and the latter is pointless.

LF: Recent decisions have been made by Vortagh and Wedge. You may notice you're getting a ship back this upcoming round and as such will be making decisions once again. ;-)

Also, sometimes previous decisions or low participation levels force a choice. Example: Insufficient participation in the mission to destroy the pirates (as an example) forces the Nemesis to take some downtime to recover. Had they done really well, they would have been able to take that time and do something more with it. :-)

As for brevet ranks - well - I notice that the people capable of promoting to brevet ranks are not doing so. Dudes, that's why we gave them to you. But a more primary use of brevet ranks is for inter-club competitions... such as if we ever decided to employ Scimitar Squadron for a competition like Outer Rim Wars. :-)

I never liked the brevet ranks idea, thus I never promoted anyone. Besides, Fel hit it on the mark about them..

I also think that Brevet ranks really aren't worth much, since they're temp ranks, and for the purpose of OS (where it really doesn't matter to begin with, it's for RP purposes). Since I don't think in terms of Brevet ranks, half the time I forget what mine is :P

And why isn't Scimitar open, anyway? Other than "Daemon said so" :P

I haven't been asked to make a decision in quite some time. And I have refrained from promoting people because i) I'm not entirely sure about the protocols surrounding this ii) I don't want to give people the idea that my sector group is handing out free high ranks to everyone who shows up at a meeting and iii) There are only a few on my ship that actually deserve it.

Unless I am gravely mistaken, Brevet ranks in "the real world" are there to give out "when the need arises". For example: a squad leader goes död. The guy who replaces him in the heat of battle would become a brevet LT. He won't get the pay, the quarters or the amenities, but he'd be a brevet LT with the rights to command.

Seeing how nothing like this has happened here, I never gave out any brevet ranks either.

However, we should just keep the system when we have it. We can use it to pre-promote people into LT in case SL/LT/CM/whaterver go AWOL, until a decision is made on who will be the LT. (I hate to see Squadrons headless, while we make decisions on who will be the next LT for the next two weeks).

This is a bit late from your discussion here, but since the brevet ranks were my idea originally anyway, let me shed some light on it.

Vortagh's point of where brevet ranks "originally" came from is pretty much correct. They were temporary promotions to fill a need. However, one often would get the pay, etc historically if you were going to be holding the position for any length of time.

Where this idea becomes useful for the GE is when we are competing with other [larger] clubs who have lots of admirals and other senior officers. If they were putting their forces under a vice admiral, or equivalent, it would almost seem strange for us to put ours under a captain or a commander. Thus, we could use these brevet ranks as a temporary means of achieving parity with the opposition.

In practice, this doesn't seem to have really happened since there has been no need of it. However, back when I was involved in decision making, I wanted to ensure that infrastructure was there for when we did get to take part in a large inter-club campaign.
