Admiral, perhaps this is overkill, but I would like to see an intermediate unit between brigade and army: a "division". While it would involve reworking of the system somewhat, in any army the division is (usually) the primary unit. It could be commanded by a brigadier general or major general.
Also, once there are sufficient numbers, a "corps" is the unit between army and division, typically commanded by a major or lieutenant general. Or, rather than use the "army" unit (which is more commonly referred to as an "army group") you could have one corps per sector force. This would eliminate confusion between "armies" and the Imperial Army as a whole. Also, it would coincide well with my division suggestion (see below) since a corps typically consists of two to four divisions. Corps could be numbered according to Sector Group assignment. Sector Group one would contain I Corps, SecGp2 would get II Corps, and so on. If necessary, divisions could then be numbered as well (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc). Brigades would carry the ship name, but also be numbered as there would be more than one per division (1st Chimaera Brigade, 2nd Chimaera Brigade, etc).
Since you use brigades and battalions as somewhat interchangable (based on ship size) it wouldn't be very difficult to just use one or the other and place a brigade/battalion on a VSD and a division on an ISD. Then, assign two or three brigades to a division, with a divisional commander on one of the relevent VSDs. Thus, each sector force would have at least two divisions at its disposal, and a system force would have a full brigade - ample troops to keep any planets in line.
I'd appreciate your thoughts, and, since I did just suggest some fairly comprehensive changes, I would be more than happy to assist you and breakdown my proposal into a nice chart to show hierarchy, etc. It just seems to me that we have an opportunity to make a nice rank and command structure that would provide plenty of room for advancement, yet still being inclusive.

I would very much like to see it broken down. When I was planning this I did use the US Army as a guide, but did not follow it all the way. This is starwars..
I used Army because 1) I don't like Corps and 2) from what I know, an Army is the largest unit. I know you come from the Navy, and your suggestions would be very helpful. Please send me an e-mail.

Long before there was a "United States Marine Corps" the term "corps" was used as a segment of an army. Up until the monumental sizes of WWII armies, a corps was the largest standard military unit in the field. There would be an army, for example the US "Army of the Potomac" in the US Civil War that would consist of several corps (the AoP had seven). Each corps usually had three divisions. In WWII, due to the large forces used, both the Allies in Europe and the Germans used "army groups" which contained several corps. The US named them armies (with the numbers spelled out), such as the First Army (under Gen. Omar Bradley) or the famous Third Army (under Gen. George Patton Jr.). Corps were typically numbered with Roman numerals (I Corps, II Corps, etc. The I Corps was the army unit in the field in the Vietnam War). Divisions were numbered by abbreviation (1st, 2nd, etc) and the US numbered their brigades according to division.
Thus, while it is the "Marine Corps" it is not comparable to a US Army Corps. The word "corps" in addition to the standard unit, can also be a generic term for a military group, such as the Marine Corps or the US Army Corps of Engineers. Some military academies also dub their students as a "corps of cadets" (the academy that I attended used the unit of "regiment" to describe us).
I'm sure Admiral Jansen meant no disrespect to the US Marine Corps.

I think LCP Hunter was referring to the Admiral's apparent dislike of the term "corps" and intrepreted as a dislike for the Marine Corps. I just happened to get a little carried away with a historical explanation.
