Senior Fleet Officer Report

FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR FLEET OFFICER

It has been quite sometime since I have issued a report, for several important reasons. First, and most obvious, is the fact that I was away for a long period of time. I am sorry that I was unable to perform my duties during this time, and the Fleet has my most profound apologies.

Second, and in a more complicated venue, is that I’ve recently been trying to come to grips with exactly what it is I’m *supposed* to do as Senior Fleet Officer. In the past, I was crystal clear on what my duties and responsibilities were, and I was very proactive in my initiative to take on an even greater role. However, as time goes by, I see myself more and more as a “figurehead” and less of a useful position. Captain of the flagship, right? The same flagship that is in spacedock with no crew? More on that later. Of course, you have to remember that SFO predates all other HC positions and when Navy Fleet Commander was created, much of what the SFO had seemed to have authority over passed on to the new position. Thus, as my predecessor Captain Vortagh found and once remarked, the responsibilities of the SFO really took a hit when the position of FC was created – and I am referring specifically about the need of the SFO to issue a “Fleet Report”. After all, the Fleet Commander commands the Fleet, not me.

So there you have it. Maybe I’ll put out a classified ad: “Out of work Senior Fleet Officer seeks position of leadership. Very experienced. References available.” (Well, maybe I don’t have references, but I certainly have credentials).

Fleet Status:
You may be asking yourself “What Fleet?”. I know I am. Captain Vortagh of the VSD Warhammer issued a very comprehensive report a few days ago, viewable at http://empirereborn.net/holonet/viewtopic.php?t=829. Also included here is his Tactical Report.

Line Captain Wedge of the Nemesis has issued his latest report here: http://empirereborn.net/holonet/viewtopic.php?t=833 One of my former squadron leaders, Lt. Commander Stark, has AWOLed one of his pilots, and Lieutenant Branet has been awarded the Bronze Seal.

The Chimaera, with a whopping crew total of *one* (me) is doing just fine, thank you very much. Nothing to see there, so you can move along.

Unless you’ve been living in a cave, you know that the Academy has a new Commandant. Congratulations to Commodore Zwibble.

Outer Sectors Campaign:
I can only urge our pilots and army personnel to take part in this program. This is it, guys. This is what we should have been doing all along and if we don’t make it work now, then I don’t know what will happen.

For starters, I would like to see much more “in character” roleplaying. That’s what this club is all about, after all. This is even easier than flying and participating, yet I don’t see much of it. I mean, all you really have to do is post a brief “in character” monologue and I’m sure you will receive some credit for it. If we haven’t been giving out credit for that sort of thing so far, then we need to start NOW.

I’m not going to beat this to death, but it’s something to consider. If anyone has any further ideas, please contact me.

Final thoughts
I have very little else to say. I think it’s important we continue to move ahead. As such, I am organizing a task force that will be dedicated to examining our current situation, drawing conclusions, and issuing a report with recommendations. The state of the Chimaera will be sorted out in future chapters; that's all I can reveal. However, I do want to echo CL Calder's words about roleplaying... there was a forum created for roleplay, aparently due to demand, yet there is not much going on there. Instead of replying with "good post" try to add to the posts and carry on the stories there... be creative, and do your best. I do believe OS awards points for fiction as well as flying, so get to it men (and women) !
