Once an officer reaches the rank of Major (MAJ), a bridge has been crossed in his or her Imperial Army career. A Major no longer serves in any company, but instead, as Brigade Executive Officer (XO) with the Brigade Commander, oversees all companies. A Major and his Brigade Commanding Officer may be thought of as two sides of a coin... While the CO typically acts as the proxy between his Brigade and the rest of the Empire (and is the highest level of review for all routine operations within), the Major is an internal supervisor of all Brigade companies.

Such supervision includes maintaining continuous contact with all subordinate company commanding officers, and the double-edged duty of recommending both awards and corrective action to the Brigade CO, where such may be warranted. A Brigade XO is also the primary level of response for routine matters and/or questions voiced by company leaders, or other troops who may be having difficulty contacting their commanding officer.
